Thanks Brian...I am rewriting a multi tenant monorail CMS in ASP.NET MVC and need to allow for tenant specific behavior. This explains a nice approach perfectly. Very helpful.

Hi,

I saw your post on the EF code first migrations website. And I completely agreed with you that MS should just to RoR like migrations for db migrations.

I was wondering if you want to help start a small codeplex project for building such a thing?
Also i want to build a better deployment service, that basically not just deploys but also migrate.

Please let me know if you are interested,

Best regards,
Emile

I used a similar script (along with psake) to set up the initial application under IIS - the idea being a dev could check out the repository, run the build and have IIS set up, too. It works out pretty well.

For those projects that use NHibernate, you can use the GenerateSchema function to generate the database schema based off of the mappings. As far as filling the database with data goes, we require our devs to keep a certain unit test up-to-date: the "integration test" of testing whether we are able to successfully persist our domain objects to the database. In your case, it may be difficult to start from scratch and write an integration test for your 500 entity system, but you may find that it would be worth it for other reasons.

I tried to follow along but without much luck.
It says: "Create a new layer on top of the other two." But how did we get to two?
Then it said: "make sure your primary color is still white." When was it set to white?
I gave up here, but thanks anyway.

@Ken,

Thanks! Alas, the t-shirts didn't get printed in time for the tour. Now I'm stuck with a huge box of them! Want a t-shirt that says "Ayende is my hero!"? ;-)
